Following a significant backlash from the Helldivers 2 community over the weekend, Sony has announced today that it will reverse its decision to enforce mandatory PSN account linking. Sony shared a brief statement via its Play Station account on X (formerly Twitter) late on Sunday evening. The statement, which has garnered over 21 million views, acknowledges the feedback received over the weekend and assures players that the previously planned May 6 update, along with its anticipated May 30 follow-up, which would have mandated Steam and PlayStation Network account linking, will no longer be implemented.

Sony's decision to require account linking posed a challenge due to Helldivers 2 being sold in countries where Sony doesn't manage the PlayStation Network. According to Sony's announcement, players in those regions who purchased the game might face losing access to it by June 4. The decision quickly sparked backlash, as millions of gamers flooded the game's Steam page with negative reviews. Many pleaded with the developers to reconsider the PSN account linking requirement.

The company stated "Helldivers fans – we've heard your feedback on the Helldivers 2 account linking update,The May 6 update, which would have required Steam and PlayStation Network account linking for new players and for current players beginning May 30, will not be moving forward."
