Sony has officially announced the formation of a new first-party PlayStation studio called Dark Outlaw Games, led by industry veteran Jason Blundell. Blundell, who serves as both the studio head and director, confirmed the exciting news during an interview with journalist Jeff Gerstmann, revealing that Dark Outlaw has been working on an undisclosed project "in the shadows."
"It's such a privilege to be able to do it with Sony as a new first-party studio," Blundell said. "Sony doesn't set up first-party studios all the time. To have that privilege is humbling, it's really nice. I'm really excited."
Blundell went on to explain that Dark Outlaw Games is currently in the early stages of development, focusing on staffing and team-building. He emphasized the importance of getting the team to collaborate effectively and fine-tuning their creative ideas. "We're getting the team to jell, getting the ideas clicking – I'm a programmer at heart, so let's test those assumptions: Is it working? You're trying to escape velocity."

With nearly two decades of experience in the gaming industry, Blundell is best known for his work at Treyarch, where he was co-studio head and a lead creator on the popular Call of Duty Zombies mode. He spent 13 years at Activision before leaving in 2020 to co-found Deviation Games with Dave Anthony. In 2021, Deviation Games signed a deal with PlayStation to create an original AAA IP, but Blundell departed the studio in 2022. The following year, Deviation Games faced significant challenges, with reports of up to 90 layoffs, and the studio ultimately shut down by March 2024.
Now leading Dark Outlaw Games, Blundell is diving into a new chapter of his career with Sony, and fans are eager to see what the studio has in store.
