According to reports, Ubisoft has made an offer for the Dishonored and Deathloop studio, alongside at least two other companies that haven’t been named.

Terms aren’t shared. Xbox hasn’t agreed to anything with anyone.

An Xbox spokesperson stated “is exploring options ahead of a December deadline” and declined to elaborate.

The clock

French labour law prevents Microsoft from simply closing down the studio. The original deadline is 13 November. Xbox added a month, pushing it to 13 December.

Bloomberg’s sources suggest a sale would let Arkane finish Marvel’s Blade, expected within one to two years. It was announced at The Game Awards in 2023.

Why Ubisoft

Less random than it looks. Ubisoft published Dark Messiah of Might and Magic, Arkane Lyon’s 2006 action RPG, long before ZeniMax acquired the studio.

The complication is once again Ubisoft. It’s mid-restructure, organising its studios into six Creative Houses, cancelling games and closing studios to reach 200 million euros in savings. Buying a 217-person team while cutting your own is a decision that needs explaining.

Xbox also considered selling to Arkane’s management, the route taken with Double Fine, Compulsion Games and Undead Labs. All three regained their IP and publishing rights, though Double Fine cut 23 roles shortly after going independent.

Where the five studios stand

So for starters, Compulsion, Double Fine and Undead Labs are out and intact. Ninja Theory had two separate deals collapse and is now in closure consultation. So a different deal all together.
