Valve, has unveiled new rules set to take effect from 2025 for hosting competitive CS2 events. These changes include adjustments to the number of directly invited teams, enforcing deadlines for event announcements by tournament organizers, and clarifying which events contribute to Valve’s official rankings.
In their blog post titled 'Open Season,' Valve outlined that the primary goal of these rules is to streamline the CS2 ecosystem, emphasizing fairness and competitiveness. This follows earlier reforms from 2023 that ended exclusivity deals in CS, such as the Louvre Agreement.
Moving forward, all CS2 events will be categorized as either ranked or unranked. Ranked tournaments affect Valve’s rankings and Major invitations, while unranked events are capped at a maximum prize pool of $100,000 per event or $250,000 annually per organizer if multiple unranked events are held.

A significant addition is the formal definition of event 'tiers,' distinguishing them by prize pool and scope. Tier 1 events, for instance, mandate invitations to top-ranked teams and specific rules for team invitations and wildcards.
Moreover, all tournaments must now be announced well in advance, with strict deadlines set by Valve to ensure a stable and predictable event calendar.
