Nineteen words. That's the entire announcement. But when the title is linked to one of the best franchises of history, it is enough.

"We expect Games to more meaningfully contribute to segment profitability going forward as our pipeline expands, including the second installment of Hogwarts Legacy." That line, tucked into Warner Bros. Discovery's Q2 2026 shareholder letter on 6 August, is the first time the company has formally acknowledged a sequel exists. No title. No release window. No platforms. No developer named.

Ironically fans spent three years reading job listings for clues. They got an earnings document instead well I guess shareholders are more important.

What's actually in the letter

WBD is restructuring around four franchises it values at over a billion dollars each: Harry Potter, Game of Thrones, Mortal Kombat, and DC. The explained that their approach is fewer titles, higher conviction, more disciplined spending.

Q2 saw the first releases under that model, LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight, which the company calls the highest-rated LEGO game ever, and Game of Thrones: Dragonfire, its second mobile title from that universe. LEGO Batman performed great,

What nobody has confirmed

The list of unknowns is longer than the list of knowns.

  • No title
  • No release date or window
  • No platforms
  • No story or gameplay details
  • No confirmation Avalanche Software is developing it

That last one deserves attention. Avalanche made the original and it was a success, hiring patterns suggest continued involvement, but the shareholder letter doesn't name a studio. Continuity would be the obvious path given the first game's performance. It hasn't been stated.

Nothing has been confirmed about multiplayer either, despite 2025 job listings that pointed toward online features and set off a round of speculation.

Why it was always coming

Hogwarts Legacy has sold more than 40 million copies since launching on PS5, Xbox Series X S and PC in February 2023, with PS4 and Xbox One versions following that May. It was 2023's highest-grossing game as expected.

Then-CFO Gunnar Wiedenfels called a sequel one of the company's biggest priorities back in 2024. Reports of development starting have circulated for roughly three years. The only surprise here is how quietly the acknowledgement finally arrived. We knew it was coming but there was not even a whisper.

When you might actually see something

Gamescom and The Game Awards have both been floated as possible venues for a first look before the end of 2026.

A 2026 release is off the table. Development cycles for open-world sequels of this scale point to 2027 or 2028, and WBD signalled 2027 earlier this year without committing to it. Most likely it will be postponed.

The wider Harry Potter push continues regardless, with HBO Max's new series due to premiere on Christmas Day, the games success will be affected by the series no doubt.
