Jung Chung-rae, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea (DPK), visited G-STAR 2025 in Busan on November 14th, reaffirming his party's commitment to the country’s expanding gaming and esports sectors. Speaking at the On-site Roundtable on K-GAME Future Strategies, Jung highlighted gaming as a key growth engine for Korea’s future.
Jung recalled his role in passing Korea’s first Game Industry Promotion Act two decades ago, despite early public resistance to esports. “Back then, people insisted games were just ‘addiction,’ but I argued that gaming would be Korea’s future cash cow,” he said.
He also discussed ongoing efforts to advance esports, including his past initiatives to integrate esports into the Armed Forces Athletic Corps and push for its recognition by the Korean Sport & Olympic Committee. However, he expressed disappointment that these efforts have stalled.
Looking forward, Jung pointed to the upcoming revision of the Game Industry Promotion Act, which is expected to pass soon, though he acknowledged challenges in securing tax incentives. He also emphasized the importance of esports to Korea’s international influence and pledged continued support for the industry.
