According to recent reports, Pedestrian Group is shutting down Kotaku Australia, along with several other brands such as Gizmodo, Vice, Refinery29, and Lifehacker, as part of a strategic shift to focus on its own properties. An internal email from Pedestrian Group CEO Matt Rowley to employees announced the news.

Pedestrian Group, which currently licenses these brands for deployment in Australia, cited financial challenges, declining advertising revenues, and organizational instability as reasons behind the decision. The move will result in the layoffs of approximately 40 employees. This decision follows a broader trend within Pedestrian's parent company, Nine, which recently cut 200 jobs across its operations, as reported earlier by The Guardian.

To the readers, thank you for showing up every single day, even the whingers in the comments."
