Kotaku Hacked

Kotaku’s X/Twitter account appears to have fallen victim to a hack today, with posts suddenly promoting a new cryptocurrency. This unexpected turn of events has sparked confusion and concern among followers, with the posts marking a stark departure from the usual content. In contrast to the recent weeks of Kotaku articles being linked, today's posts were entirely focused on advertising the crypto coin, with one even including a direct link to the coin’s website.
Despite the apparent hack, there was a brief moment of uncertainty, as some speculated it could be a business decision by Kotaku’s parent company, G/O Media. However, Kotaku’s own Ethan Gach confirmed that the account had indeed been compromised. This did little to quell the bizarre nature of the incident, especially given the context of G/O Media’s recent history, including controversial moves like the transformation of Deadspin into a “zombie” site.

By the time this article was written, the crypto coin link had been removed, and it is unclear whether Kotaku has regained control of its account. However, the stunt has drawn widespread criticism, with many questioning the logic behind using Kotaku, an established gaming and pop culture outlet, as a platform for crypto promotion.
