Nintendo Aims to End Piracy

Nintendo is ramping up its efforts against unauthorized Switch shops and modders, requesting a US District Court to subpoena business records from various firms to identify alleged pirates.

According to Game File, Nintendo is specifically targeting the subreddit SwitchPirates, which has over 190,000 members. This move is part of an ongoing lawsuit against James 'Archbox' Williams, who faces various piracy-related charges. Nintendo won the case by default judgment after Williams failed to appear in court.

"Because Mr. Williams has elected not to appear in this action, [Nintendo of America] is not able to serve discovery on him or to take his deposition," Nintendo stated in the court filing. "Accordingly, without third party discovery, it will be impossible for NOA to ascertain the identity of the unnamed individuals who worked with Mr. Williams in operating the pirate shops or otherwise making available to the public pirated Nintendo games. As set forth below, NOA has identified a number of third parties who are likely to have information that will assist NOA in identifying some of these unnamed individuals."

Nintendo has asked the US District Court for the Western District of Washington to subpoena companies such as Cloudflare, Discord, Github, Google, and Reddit to help identify individuals allegedly involved in piracy alongside Williams.
