Destiny 2 has pulled more than 160,000 concurrent players on Steam after the release of Monument of Triumph, its final major content update, which launched on June 9. The update peaked at 167,867 players on Steam according to SteamDB, a figure that comfortably beats the game's last two paid expansions. Since Steam typically accounts for roughly a third of Destiny 2's player base, the total peak across all platforms is estimated to be closer to 400,000. The launch also pushed Destiny 2 to the top two on Steam's global best-sellers list, an unusual feat for a free update on a game widely assumed to be winding down.

Outperforming the Paid Expansions
The numbers stand out most when set against recent releases. The Edge of Fate expansion, which introduced the divisive Portal system, peaked at 108,534 players, while the following Star Wars-themed Renegades expansion managed only 71,278. Monument of Triumph, a free update, exceeded both. Part of the draw is that it walks back several unpopular changes and leans into long-requested features, including tiered gear for all raids and dungeons and the deprecation of the Portal and SRL, the kind of "return to form" that brought lapsed Guardians back in significant numbers.
What the Update Adds
There's a substantial amount of content to work through. Almost every activity features new or reprised weapons, spanning the Black Armory arsenal and the return of iconic guns like The Palindrome and Steelfeather Repeater, and players have begun rediscovering reopened locations across destinations, including Niobe Labs and The Dark Forest in the EDZ. Progression centres on the monument in the Tower, where four statues of Guardian Tenets tie into the update's Triumph section. Completing objectives like clearing dungeons or finding points of interest earns Legendary Marks, which can be exchanged for cosmetic rewards, including more than 15 armor ornament sets per class. The sheer volume has led many in the community to remark that they would happily have paid for a drop of this size.
