Yesterday, members of the Independent Workers' Union of Great Britain (IWGB) protested outside the offices of Rockstar North and Take-Two Interactive in London and Edinburgh. The protests were in response to accusations of union busting, where the company allegedly fired employees for trying to organize a union at Rockstar.
Fred Carter, an organizer with the IWGB, spoke to reporters outside Rockstar North, saying the workers who were fired were shocked by the company's actions. He explained that these employees were just trying to discuss their pay, working conditions, and how to improve the workplace by creating a union.
Carter said:
"They've been fired for exercising their legal rights to speak to each other about their pay and conditions, to build a union in their workplace, to build a fairer, better workplace where the people who build games have a voice in how they're made."
He added that many workers were unaware that their co-workers had been dismissed, and some were upset by the sudden firings. “People didn’t know what was going on, that their co-workers were being torn from their desks and marched out of the building. I think [there was] real outrage, loss, grief,” Carter said.
He also described how he had supported some of the fired workers, who were afraid to talk about their situation publicly. "I’ve stood with people while they cried this week, I’ve sat in people’s kitchens because they’re too afraid to talk about their work in public or outside the workplace," Carter said. "This is a community that’s in shock and in anger."
