Bungie has explored the possibility of pricing its upcoming game Marathon at $40, instead of adopting the prevalent free-to-play (F2P) model. This consideration comes amid a market trend favoring F2P monetization for multiplayer games.
While Bungie has not officially confirmed Marathon's pricing strategy, the studio's internal playtests and feedback from selected streamers suggest that the game might justify the $40 price tag. Currently, there are two playable maps, though the final number has not been disclosed.

Marathon, an extraction shooter with unique Bungie elements, will feature various classes with distinct abilities. The game is based on Bungie’s Marathon IP, a series of first-person shooters from the 1990s. It is set to launch on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series XS.
The report also highlights ongoing challenges within Bungie, including low morale among developers following a recent round of layoffs and company restructuring. In July, Bungie reduced its workforce by 220 employees and restructured its teams, including spinning off one unannounced project into a new PlayStation studio.
The potential $40 price point for Marathon contrasts with the recent struggles of Sony’s Concord, which also adopted a $40 price but faced a problematic launch.
