According to recent data leaks, and a report by Insider Gaming, Battlefield is working on a new Battle Royale mode, set to be developed by Ripple Effect. The mode is expected to feature many traditional elements of a Battle Royale, including solo, duo, trio, and squad matches, an armor system, loot rarity, call-ins, update kits and weapons, and a shrinking play zone.
Additionally, the game will have a "free-to-play component," which will serve as the core of the Battle Royale experience. Another mode called Gauntlet, previously mentioned in Insider Gaming reports, is also referenced in the game files.

Why Warzone Was Successful? Call of Duty: Warzone has been one of the most successful free-to-play Battle Royale games, thanks to its large player base and consistent content updates. Several key factors contributed to its success, including the seamless integration with the existing Call of Duty ecosystem, which allowed players to transfer progress and unlocks between the Battle Royale and traditional multiplayer modes. The game's free-to-play nature also ensured accessibility, bringing in a wide range of players and creating a large, active community.
Furthermore, Warzone’s regular updates, seasonal events, and constant introduction of new content kept players engaged over the long term. By offering players both a free-to-play experience and the option to purchase additional content, Warzone was able to generate significant revenue without forcing players to buy the full game.
Battlefield V's Battle Royale Struggled In contrast, Battlefield V’s Firestorm mode, which launched in 2019, failed to capture the same level of success. Despite being released as a paid component of Battlefield V, Firestorm was unable to compete with the established dominance of other free-to-play Battle Royales like Fortnite and Warzone. One of the main reasons for Firestorm's failure was its delayed release—by the time it launched, the Battle Royale genre was already heavily saturated, with several games already firmly established in the market.
Additionally, Firestorm lacked the consistent updates and content drops that made other games thrive. Players found the mode repetitive and disconnected from the larger Battlefield experience, which often made it feel like an afterthought rather than a fully integrated component of the game. The absence of a free-to-play option also limited its appeal, as players were required to purchase the full game to access the Battle Royale mode.
Can Battlefield’s New Battle Royale Succeed? With the decision to make the upcoming Battlefield Battle Royale free-to-play, DICE and EA are clearly looking to learn from past mistakes. By offering a free entry point, similar to Warzone, the hope is to attract a larger player base, with the potential for cross-progression and customization to encourage premium purchases for the full game, including its campaign and multiplayer components.
If DICE can maintain a consistent flow of updates and content, and integrate the mode seamlessly into the Battlefield universe, there’s potential for this new Battle Royale mode to find the success that Firestorm lacked. However, much will depend on whether it can stand out in a crowded market and offer players a compelling experience that keeps them engaged over time.
