Mark Rubin, the executive producer of Ubisoft's first-person shooter XDefiant, has confirmed that the game will be shutting down in 2025. Released in May 2024, XDefiant aimed to challenge Call of Duty but ultimately struggled to maintain momentum as a live-service title.
Upon launch, the game earned praise from FPS fans, offering a fun new addition to the casual shooter genre. It quickly amassed 1 million unique players within just two hours of release, setting a record as the fastest Ubisoft game to reach that milestone. However, player numbers began to decline steadily in the months that followed. By October, rumors of a potential shutdown began circulating, though they were unconfirmed at the time.

Now, Rubin has officially announced on X that XDefiant will be shutting down, with servers remaining active until June 3, 2025. New downloads and player registrations are no longer available as of today. However, the content for Season 3 will still be released, although specific dates for its launch are yet to be announced. Players who purchased the Ultimate Founder's Pack, or made any in-game purchases in the past 30 days, will receive full refunds, which Rubin assures will be processed automatically within eight weeks.
